Underoath Celebrates Two Decades of “They’re Only Chasing Safety” at The Observatory

October 22, 2024 – Last Tuesday marked an unforgettable evening at The Observatory in Santa Ana as Underoath took the stage for their 20th Anniversary Tour of 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety. With a sold-out crowd eagerly anticipating a night of nostalgia and a high-energy performance, the atmosphere was electric from the moment the lights dimmed.

The show kicked off dramatically with “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape,” setting the tone for what would be an adrenaline-fueled night. As the crowd roared with recognition, it became clear this was a celebration not just of an album, but of community and shared experiences. Spencer Chamberlain’s powerful vocals ignited the audience, sending waves of energy throughout the venue.

The setlist was a remarkable journey through both the celebrated album and the broader Underoath discography. Following closely behind were the fan favorites “Young and Aspiring” and “A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White.” Each track was met with an eruption of cheers and sing-alongs, creating an almost surreal connection between the band and the audience.

Underoath’s performance of “The Impact of Reason” showcased their ability to balance intensity with introspection, drawing the crowd deeper into the evening’s emotional core. The haunting melodies were juxtaposed with the frantic energy of “Reinventing Your Exit,” which had everyone jumping as a wave of nostalgia swept through the venue.

The pacing of the set was masterfully crafted, with songs like “The Blue Note” and “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” bringing the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. Each song not only highlighted the band’s musical evolution but also reaffirmed their place in the hearts of so many fans.

“Down, Set, Go” and “I Don’t Feel Very Receptive Today” had the crowd in a frenzy, with people thrashing to the beats as the band lit up the stage with their signature energy. A brief pause for reflection came with “I’m Content With Losing,” a poignant reminder of the struggles and triumphs that Underoath often embodies in their music.

For the encore, the band returned to the stage with a set of powerful performances that left the audience begging for more. Starting with “Teeth,” the crowd surged with enthusiasm, followed by the explosive “I Got 10 Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain’t Gonna Do Jack.” The anthemic quality of “You’re Ever So Inviting” was impossible to resist, as fans sang along, drowning out the band at times.

The emotional high continued with “Breathing in a New Mentality” and “When the Sun Sleeps,” which served as a bittersweet reminder of the themes of hope and redemption woven throughout their music. The night culminated in a triumphant performance of “Writing on the Walls,” leaving the audience in a state of exhilaration.

As the final notes faded away and the lights returned, attendees filed out of The Observatory with a sense of fulfillment and communal joy. Underoath’s 20th Anniversary Tour for They’re Only Chasing Safety was a poignant reminder of the band’s lasting impact on the post-hardcore scene and the meaningful connection their music fosters. For those lucky enough to witness the first night, it was an evening filled with memories, passion, and camaraderie—a true celebration of an album and the lives it has touched.

Here’s to many more years of powerful performances from Underoath!
