Hey so not to brag or anything but My Morning Jacket played the best freaking set of all time here in Dallas on 4/12 at Toyota Music Factory. I can still feel the vibrations from the electric solos and groovy saxophone and the steel pedal guitar. If you want to have the most magical, psychedelic evening of rock music, go see My Morning Jacket!
Opening the set was the incredibly cool, multi-instrumentalist Grace Cummings. From vocals to keys to guitar, Grace came to gain some new fans–it’s me, I’m the new fan and I don’t doubt the rest of the audience as well. Her voice is strong and has the perfect amount of angst and grit that one could not necessarily compare but relate to Patti Smith, Bonnie Tyler or Annie Lenox and lyricism akin to Joni Mitchell. Her hauntingly smooth songs were a perfect opening act.

My Morning Jacket’s stage set up was so far out–it was really the giant stuffed bear for me–and the lighting crew should be hired by every single artist and band. They had 5 big square LED lit boxes, lasers and a disco ball that lit up the whole room for about two hours straight. The band had a ton of music to get through in that time which meant no room for crowd banter in between songs.
The band opened the show with “Here in Spirit,” a song by Jim James, the lead vocalist for My Morning Jacket, followed by “Mahgeetah” from their 2003 album It Still Moves and “Aluminum Park” from 2008 album Evil Urges. A few songs later they brought Grace Cummings out to play a cover of “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young. Grace joined the guys later to perform “River Road” and AC/DC cover “Ride On.” My Morning Jacket played all but two songs from their latest album titled is. While I am devastated that I did not get to hear the magic that is “Time Waited” at my show, my boys played one of my top three favorite songs in their discography, “Feel You,” during their encore.
My Morning Jacket ended their time on stage with the craziest performance of “Wordless Chorus,” massive fan favorite and lead track off their 2005 album Z. I think I can die happy now that I’ve heard Jim wail out those high falsetto notes and the outro?? SHEESH! It’s difficult to put into words the pure bliss seeing these guys perform gave me. And one last thing about my dudes–they personally handed out their setlists to the people at the barricade before exiting the stage! I’ve never seen that from artists at this caliber and I thought that was rad as hell.
Before I go, I have to mention the delightful sea of humans in the pit. It was absolutely packed; however, everyone was somehow very respectfully spaced out as everyone had plenty of room to groove, dance around and bang those heads.
