Phil’s Picks: Smashing Pumpkins To Re-issue ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’

Another Smashing Pumpkins album is getting renewed attention.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of its release, Smashing Pumpkins will re-issue its 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness next month. The announcement was made Thursday through a news release. According to the release, the band will re-issue the album Nov. 21.

According to information provided in the news release, the re-issue will feature approximately 80 minutes of live content recorded during the band’s 1996 tour in support of the album. The re-issue will be released on separate 4CD deluxe edition, 4CD SHM set, and 6LP vinyl box set. The vinyl set will feature new liner notes (as will the CD sets) along with a custom tarot card deck, and seven lithographs housed in a velvet slipcase.

Audiences can pre-save the record and hear one of the re-issue’s live tracks, ‘Geek U.S.A.’ here.

Front man and band founder Billy Corgan discussed the forthcoming re-issue in a prepared statement.

“Unearthing these live recordings from the original lineup’s true, last large-scale tour was a labour of love, and for me certainly a bittersweet as once we blew apart in 1996, we were never quite the same: be it emotionally, or spiritually,” said Corgan. ““Thankfully, I can say this as the band is now enjoying our greatest public success since that time, and one can hear in these tapes the raw power that such nascent faith afforded us, then, and the will and wisdom to persevere that followed.”

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third Smashing Pumpkins album to get re-issued this year. Machina and Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music were re-issued Aug. 22. Corgan’s Madame Zuzu’s Tea Shop released the albums exclusively in an 80-track vinyl box set that features a 48-snog presentation of Machina plus 32 bonus tracks of demos, outtakes and live performances.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is one of the best albums in Smashing Pumpkins’ catalog. The albumdebuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart and has since gone on to enjoy Platinum status according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album, which spawned five singles — ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings,’ ‘1979,’ ‘Zero,’ ‘Tonight Tonight,’ and ‘Thirty-Three, earned the band seven Grammy nominations and went on to win in the “Best Hard Rock Performance” category for its single, ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings.’
