October 12, 2025 – A Tony Hawk video game just dropped, Warped Tour is going strong, MySpace deathcore is at a peak right now, and Mudvayne is touring their album “L.D. 50” with Static-X… if you thought you were living through the 2000s again, you’d be wrong. Welcome to 2025, where the past is coming back in full swing, and yes, that does include an insane tour between Mudvayne, Static-X, and Vended, a hot new face in their genre. San Antonio was lucky enough to have been one of the stops on this blast-from-the-past radio-rock tour that is sure to be remembered for a long time, and ZRockR got to come along for the ride. Let’s go back and revisit that night.
Vended started the night, a small-city band that hails from Des Moines, Iowa, they played an insane set full of face paint, gnarly growls, and some pretty positive messages behind their lyrics. The group – made up of Griffin Taylor, Simon Crahan, Jeremiah Pugh, Connor Grodzicki, and Cole Espeland – took the sold out arena by storm, performing a truly impressive set covering nearly all of their short lifespan. It’s rare that the first band of the night gets the first mosh pit AND first crowd surfer, but that’s just Vended.
Static-X marked this night to make their return to San Antonio as they’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut, seminal album, “Wisconsin Death Trip”. A beloved album that shot the band to the top of their genre, by the time they came out to play, the arena was packed to the brim in anticipation of the bands signature “Evil Disco” sound – a blend of industrial rock, electronic dance, and nu-metal. Unsurprisingly, the energy took effect immediately, inciting frenzies of crowd surfers and moshers both young and old to “Push It”. Crazy strobes, pulsing LED screens full of nostalgic clips, characters in costume shooting beach balls and smoke, a bubble machine, and an endless setlist of classics, the room got rowdy fast and never stopped.
Mudvayne – or, MuDvAyNe for the purists out there – wrapped their stage in lights and set the place ablaze. The dirty rockers from Illinois celebrated the 25th anniversary of L.D. 50 by donning their classic smudged makeup, bloody overalls, and bizarre body-language, and playing a show that the sold-out arena would never forget. A solid night of hits both new and old, the change in atmosphere from Static-X’s danceable electro-rock to the dirty, grimey Southern metal of Mudvayne was palpable, beautiful, and shocking in all the best ways.
All three bands sounded excellent, complimenting and contrasting against each other in the best ways possible. If you thought nu-metal and dad rock were dead, think again; it’s just getting started.
