Our gal Cyn was on site to capture the moment that the NOFX Retrospective pulled back its beer stained curtains to show the world the past 40 years of the band’s legacy.
I made a stop at the museum recently myself (1. to see the exhibit myself and 2. because I’d been away from the museum too long, and there is more cool shit there!) and can honestly say you will need a solid couple of hours to truly take in all of the pieces of the retrospective.
Downstairs, as part of the main tour, you still have the pieces of history from Fat Wreck Chords and some of the early NOFX days, but travel upstairs to where the wedding chapel used to be, and you are absolutely surrounded. Photos. Tape decks full of demos. Backstage passes. Set lists. The amount of items in there is insane.
Of course you still have the Warped Tour exhibit and such, and the music room, but outside of the old chapel area, there are more photo galleries detailing setlists (including a few with one of Vegas’ legacy hardcore acts Fuck Shit Piss) as well as rows upon rows of album art from the band and vocalist Fat Mike’s solo career as Cokie the Clown. With the exception of the Aquabats onesie, most of the mannequins upstairs have been changed into shirts from throughout the band’s history. Stop by the Vinyl Threat store upstairs (and say hi to Morat if he’s manning the booth) and you can pick up your own little piece of NOFX history.
Whether you are a fan of the band or not, you cannot deny the stamp they put on the punk scene; a band that shouldn’t have gone far not only had a 40 year music career, but a festival, countless albums and collabs, a label, and now a huge part of the museum. It is absolutely worth the stop!
