The 90s are back! Or, at least they were for one single night in the small town of Helotes, Texas. On November 7th, Tracy Lawrence brought his headlining show to Helotes, a small blue-collar town on the edge of San Antonio, Texas, and it was incredible. Packing cowgirls and leather boots into the outdoor stage area of Floore’s Country Store, the night was one for nostalgia, heartbreak, finding new love, and reflecting on America – where we’ve come from and where we are now.
Josh Ward was the opening act, a bluesy traditional country artist with an incredibly talented backing band. The crowd loved him, singing his songs right back at him and dancing at all the right parts. Cover songs like “Miami My Amy” felt placed tastefully, and ultimately it was a strong opening act.

Honky tonk superstar, Tracy Lawrence was the main event, though, and boy oh boy did he deliver. “Find Out Who Your Friends Are”, “Time Marches On”, “Paint Me A Birmingham”, “Alibis”, the man has an impressive resume of chart smashing hits. Tracy Lawrence – a transformative genre blending artist whose recipe for rock and roll radio country music brought a wave of licks and riffs to the South in the early 1990s. Lawrence’s impact on modern country has been significant, arguably so much so that without him the modern titans of country as they stand now, may not have been as successful without his hand. The crowd was one of the loudest I’ve ever heard. The seated guests were singing their hearts out, the standing ones were dancing and stomping it out. Budweiser neons flickered in the background as Lawrence performed his declarative “Made In America” and kept buzzing as he made his way through “Time Marches On”, a reflective look into the American family dynamic.
Thankfully, there were no “Texas Tornadoes” – except for the song – which blew the whole place away. All in all, it was a beautiful night to be singing up at the “Stars Over Texas”.
