Green Today – Welcome to Paradise… Nevada!

The Green Today Green Day tribute played the Copa Room at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino on Friday, July 24, 2026.

In the 1990s, Green Day rose from humble beginnings in California performing gigs at 924 Gilman Street, to becoming international rock superstars. Their blend of pop and punk sounds made them one of the biggest rock bands in history, and they’re a band that hasn’t been afraid to branch out musically, going from punk anthems to full-blown rock operas and concept albums. Green Day also holds the distinction of being one of the first rock bands I ever got into on my own (as in they’re a band my parents didn’t introduce me to), having heard their tunes on the radio and at school, and getting hooked from a pretty young age. I even had the luxury of seeing the band live once in 2001, at the Cox Pavilion, when I was just 16 years old. It remains one of my most memorable concert experiences. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool rocked the world… and continue to do so.

Unsurprisingly, when a band gets to be as big as Green Day, there will be tributes. Green Today is a Green Day tribute hailing from California. Much like the actual trio tours with additional musicians, Green Today is a four-piece band (including a female guitarist!) consisting of musicians who clearly know, love, and respect all eras of the biggest band to emerge from 924 Gilman Street back in the day.

Hearing about this show was a pleasant surprise. Although the Tuscany mostly tends to book bands similar to what one would’ve seen at Count’s Vamp’d before they closed last year, they do occasionally dip their toes into 90s alternative sounds; a handful of tributes in these genres have played there recently. But I’d never seen a full-on Green Day tribute, and was ecstatic to hear we’d be getting some of the band’s tunes done live in an intimate high-energy live setting. My thanks as always to the crew at Tuscany for keeping rock alive in Vegas, including Mike, Brian, Grayson, and Mitch. Probably the only issue I have with the Friday night shows at Tuscany is the late start times; though this is largely the result of the Copa Room being used for other events, including a long-running Rat Pack show.

One major surprise at this show was how big of a crowd the group attracted! Even prior to doors opening, there was a line down the hall outside of the Copa Room of punk rockers, young and old alike. A great attraction of the Tuscany is that most of their gigs are all ages, allowing many younger fans to come and experience live rock and roll. Throughout the evening, I even saw a young four-year-old fan rocking out near the stage! From people like me who were 90s kids that grew up with Green Day to those who are now parents introducing their kids to this music, it was definitely one of the most age-diverse crowds I’ve seen in the venue so far. The majority of the people who packed the house didn’t look familiar to me (most of the shows I attend are 80s hard rock and metal bands/tributes) but it’s great to see a whole new audience introduced to what the Copa Room has to offer rock fans in Sin City!

As was previously stated, the group consists of four musicians. A lead vocalist/guitarist filling the Billie Joe Armstrong role, thankfully looking and sounding the part, which is difficult given Armstrong’s unique singing style. The band is rounded out by a female guitarist who looked like she could’ve been Joan Jett’s daughter, a drummer with a great comedic personality (he didn’t look like Tre Cool but clearly nailed the personality), and a bass player who looked like he could’ve been part of one of the classic old-school punk bands that predated Green Day. Definitely an interesting, diverse, and as I’d quickly discover, capable quartet!

So… when you’re paying tribute to Green Day, what do you play? That’s a challenge when you’ve got 14 studio albums worth of material spanning many different eras and sounds. Do you play for the casual fans who came to hear the hits? Do you play for the die-hard fans who want to dig deeper into the catalogue? Do you emphasize any eras over any others? I often nitpick setlists (yes, I’m that kind of a fan) but I had very few complaints with what Green Today put together here. They played a single two-hour set (thank you so much for not splitting it into multiple sets and going past 1:00 AM like so many other bands do!) that was packed with a little bit of everything. This included classic cuts from the days when they were signed to Reprise Records and hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo, including fare like “Long View,” “She,” “Brain Stew,” “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” and “Warning,” to name a few. But the band also went further and played cuts from the band’s concert albums/rock operas AMERICAN IDIOT and 21st CENTURY BREAKDOWN, including fare like “21 Guns,” “Know Your Enemy,” “American Idiot,” “Holiday,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Hell, the band gave us the nine-minute epic “Jesus of Suburbia!” A few deeper cuts/minor hits were tossed in including “Burnout,” “Geek Stink Breath,” “Walking Contradiction,” and “Nice Guys Finish Last.” We even got J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva) from the ANGUS soundtrack! The biggest and best surprise for this fan was getting to hear two cuts from the band’s early days on Lookout! Records, those being “Christie Road” and “2,000 Light Years Away.” (If one wants to get technical, “Welcome to Paradise,” which the band performed, was a cut from the seminal 1994 DOOKIE album, but an earlier version did appear on the band’s second and final Lookout! release, KERPLUNK!, so if you count that song, that’s technically three Lookout! era tunes we got.) They even completely threw the audience for a loop with a surprise cover of Blink-182’s “All the Small Things,” which got some of the loudest and most enthusiastic response of the evening!

And… how about the band? This quartet has a great stage chemistry, tons of personality, plays the tunes fantastically, and had the entire audience (which was quite a packed house!) on their feet the whole night. They encouraged fan participation, and got plenty of it from legions of Green Day fans. These guys (and gal!) played for two hours straight without taking a single break, and at no point did the level of energy in this room ever diminish. I’ve seen a lot of bands this year, including local, national, and international talent, from clubs to arenas alike, but I can probably say in all honesty this is the most fun I’ve had at a rock show in I don’t know how long.

I’d love to see these guys again and hear them pull out even more of the Green Day catalogue. Some other tunes I’d love to hear these guys try their hands at include “Bang Bang” from the 2016 REVOLUTION RADIO album (this would make a killer opening song!), “At the Library” from the band’s Lookout! Records debut album 39/SMOOTH, the hilarious Tre Cool-sung “Dominated Love Slave” from KERPLUNK! (I really think the drummer they’ve got here has the sense of humor to pull this off), “Redundant” from NIMROD, and minor hits “Macy’s Day Parade” and “Castaway” from WARNING. I could go on for hours about all the Green Day tunes I’d love to hear Green Today take a crack at, because I truly believe they could do them justice.

Green Today rocked me and this entire Tuscany Copa Room audience. The continuous two-hour single set, great musicians with a sense of humor encouraging audience participation, and a setlist that covered all the bases and then some, from big hits to deep cuts alike. I loved listening to Green Day in my youthful years (and I still do!), and these guys transported me back in time in all the best ways. If you’re at all a Green Day fan and will be in a place where these guys are playing, you owe it to yourself to go. I had the time of my life. You will too.
