The Black Dahlia Murder is one of those bands that got me and a ton of other of my high school peers into death metal. Their use of melody in their songs made them a gateway band. Similar to Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, and At The Gates. (Who happen to be coming to Vegas with Grand Magus at the House of Blues in October. )

Past Love

Personally I fell in love with their sound on 2005’s ‘Miasma’. And it certainly caught my eye that the album cover featured the New York, New York and MGM casinos. Also when the video for the title track came out; it featured the band out for a bar crawl through the Vegas nightlife.

“Statutory Ape” was the music video that introduced a lot of people to the band’s humorous side that doesn’t exist in the band’s music. Or in Trevor Strnad’s lyrics. The song also features one of my favorite guitar solos, an exotic piece played by former guitarist John Kempainen.

But it’s the next album ‘Nocturnal’ that captured the hearts and minds of death metal fans the world over. From Swedish artist’s Kristian ‘Necrolord’ Wåhlin’s art on the album’s cover to the songs themselves! My two favorites being the Castlevania II inspired “What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse”; to the album’s killer closer “Warborn”.

Life Fan

I haven’t loved a The Black Dahlia Murder album as much as ‘Miasma’ and ‘Nocturnal’. However their latest efforts 2013’s ‘Everblack’ and 2017’s ‘Nightbringers’ have come damn close. The latter like ‘Nocturnal’ featuring the spectacular work of ‘Necrolord’ on the cover.

Having seen the band a number of times before on various summer tours; I’m realizing just now that to my shame I may not have seen them play anything longer than a thirty minute set before. Just makes me even more excited to see them on September the 10th!

Opening up for The Black Dahlia Murder on this run will be locals Pariah Was One and Vatican Falling. (Along with possibly other guests?) Tickets for this event can be purchased HERE, or from the promoters.
