April 29, 2025 – Freeman Coliseum, a titan of events here in San Antonio, Texas. At over eighty years old, with more concerts, sports games, and conventions under its belt than one can count, the venue is holding on strong and still attracting some of the largest shows in the city. I saw a poster for a James Brown show on the wall, which tells you exactly the kind of historic power that this place has. Pair that with the unstoppable force of the Sessanta 2.0 tour (a writhing hydra of a tour, boasting three legendary rock bands all playing at the same time – Primus, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer) and you have the kind of musical event that only comes once in a lifetime.
The original Sessanta tour took place in 2024, and existed as a sort of experimental celebration for the sixtieth birthday of Maynard James Keenan – frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. It played a pretty limited run, only hitting a handful of cities across the United States before dispersing. Many were disappointed by the limited shows on the lineup, and left begging Primus and Keenan for more dates and shows on the Sessanta lineup. But why? What makes the Sessanta tour so special, so different, and so unique that it attracts swarms upon swarms of fans to each stadium-based show? Well, because the three bands on the lineup all play on the same stage, at the same time. All three bands have their setups on the stage and rotate playing each other’s songs, with each band playing about three songs of each group before they rotate to play another group’s songs. And the cycle goes on and on for a total of three acts and three hours, with brief intermissions between each act. It sounds impressive on paper, but was
the execution actually worth it? Hell yes it was.
First and foremost, if you’ve never seen photos or videos from this elusive and colossal tour, that’s because Maynard Keenan has strict no phone rules. You’ll get kicked out before you hit the shutter button on your IPhone. The strictness of this rule actually elevated the experience. I kind of wish there were stricter rules on phones at more shows now that this one has ended. Keenan called the audience to remain in their bodies, not look at their screens, and to dance with their neighbors and stay with each other in celebration right there in that room; and that they did. Sessanta’s revolving door of musicians and songs was magical. Ping pong tables were brought on stage, Keenan played Sock ‘em Rock ‘em Robots at in the middle of a song, there was mic stand jousting, plenty of gags, and a setlist that made the people around me gasp and scream regularly in excitement. It was a really great time. The evening ended with Keenan announcing a new Puscifer album this Fall, and then by playing one collective anthem to send the audience home. What an evening.
Catch Sessanta when it comes to your city! The next tour dates are down below, and as Keenan said, “we may never play these songs ever again.” Don’t miss this.
