Devildriver fans got a new preview of its forthcoming album this week.
The band premiered its new single, ‘Dead in the Water’ and the song’s companion video Wednesday. The song is the second single from the band’s forthcoming album, Strike and Kill, which is scheduled for release July 10 through Napalm Records. The band premiered the record’s lead single, ‘Dig Your Own Grave’ and the song’s companion video.
Musically speaking, ‘Dead in the Water’ is clearly different from ‘Dig Your Own Grave.’ The band’s familiar groove metal lean is there, but in comparing the songs’ arrangements, the current single bears its own identity, opening with a rich, heavy melodic riff before launching into a full on almost death/black metal approach that honestly sounds takes audiences back in time to the band’s debut album from so many years ago.
Front man Dez Fafara even made not of the comparison in a prepared statement.
“The vibe musically on this is very old school DEVILDRIVER and the entire band is cracking hard here, if you’re a long time listener you’re gonna love this one!,” said Fafara. “Enjoy!”
Additionally, Fafara addressed the song’s uplifting lyrical theme.
“This is one of the most positive songs I’ve ever written lyrically, coming from a very dark time straight into blinding light,” he said. “I needed to empower others to do the same as I did, and tell them to ‘stay the course,’ life turns around if given the chance to flourish.”
