If you have not heard of The Hu by now, I’m going to have to ask what rock you’ve been hiding under.
Fusing heavy metal and traditional Mongolian folk, the band seemed to take the world by storm in late 2018 when they released “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem”. By Spring of 2019 the band reached number one on Billboard’s Hard Rock Digital Song Sales, and with good reason.
A secondary version of “Wolf Totem” featuring Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach was released in 2019, but if I’m being honest, it takes away the heaviness from the original version. I don’t need a song in English to appreciate it, give me the original version all day long. The original is deep and powerful, perfect for starting your day in order to get the fire to take it on.
As for “Yuve Yuve Yu”, the song has more of a gallop, mixing actual singing as well as the throat singing. I don’t think you can go wrong with either for your first listen of the band.
The Hu took over yet again in 2020 with a cover of Metallica’s “Sad but True”, which was loved by Metallica and Hu fans alike.
If you are fans of bands like Apocalyptia and/or Metsatoll, I really think The Hu would be up your alley. Guitars, traditional instruments, throat singing; what is there not to love?
The band has played Vegas before, and have always not left concert goers disappointed. They are returning yet again on April 17th to Brooklyn Bowl for their Black Thunder Tour, and it will be another amazing show. If you’re not familiar with their sound and not sure if it is something you’d dig, I highly suggest giving them a listen, or just go to the show and let it surprise you.
