I’d never heard of Roll-Em-Up Taquitos until I got the invitation from my Editor-in-Chief for a meal there. I was certainly intrigued by what I heard upon visiting the company’s website, though. Apparently they have several locations in the country, stretching as far west as California (where most of their locations seem to be) and as far east as Texas, with further expansion plans on the table as well. This Las Vegas location, found at Spring Mountain and Fort Apache, is their first in the State of Nevada, although a second location in Henderson is in the works as well.
The first thing I noticed from the moment I walked through the door of this place is how bold the decor on the walls was – this bright orange color scheme is certainly a little overwhelming at first, though I won’t deny that the place has a look all its own, along with the obligatory “business story” stuff posted inside as well. The menu is fairly small, simple and to to the point. Essentially, taquitos (as the name implies) are the flagship item, with plenty of side dishes including street corn, chips with a variety of sauces, beans, and even a “churro donut” that is the business’s signature dessert item. Even with a fairly small venue I won’t deny I was a little overwhelmed at first glance with the choices at hand! There are four taquito types – beef, chicken, cheese, and potato (the latter two of which I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere else) and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. They typically come topped with shredded cheese, mild sauce, guacamole, and sour cream (though you can obviously ask for anything omitted you don’t like).
What I ultimately decided on was a two-piece combo (larger combos and bulk orders are also available) which included two chicken taquitos in flour tortillas (topped with everything but the guac), chips with queso sauce, a drink, and I also got one of the churro donuts. Following me placing my order it didn’t take too terribly long to get the food. All the staff persons working this night were very friendly and excellent at their jobs, something that gives me great hope this chain will continue to expand and get the attention it deserves.
Upon taking one bite of the chicken taquito, I knew I was in heaven. With so many places that revolve around other staples of Mexican cuisine, why did it take so long for someone to open a taquito-centric place? And getting nachos that can be dipped in queso sauce was a definite plus; this is a nice departure from places that only have salsa and guac for their chips (though those are certainly still options if that’s what you’re into). For my drink (the place carries Pepsi products), I got the Stubborn-brand root beer, something I’d previously only seen at the Jersey Mike’s chain, which was quite good. As far as desserts go, the churro donut was amazing, crispy and sweet and pretty much tasting exactly like I’d expect, though I mean that in a good way!
With the menu choices (I’m eager to try potato and cheese taquitos), I’ll almost certainly be back the next time that I’m in the neighborhood, and I’m equally looking forward to the opening of the eventual Henderson location, and hopefully, more of them across Vegas. Very highly recommended!
