YOU GUYS! I just saw Chiodos for the first time since they played South By So What festival in 2015! Going from crowd surfing (and subsequently breaking an Armani watch I had stuffed in my pocket so as not to lose it–dumb)for a chance to see Craig Owens up close to being five feet away in the photo pit just ten years later? I am going to lose my mind. “The Undertaker’s Thirst For Revenge Is Unquenchable” has been my ultimate emo anthem since high school, it is still my most-played song of that era and hearing it at South Side Ballroom Monday night in Dallas scratched a long-time itch.
Let’s take a moment to talk about the opening bands. I had not heard of The Callous Daoboys before but they freaking rocked! I’m always fascinated by bands that use instruments other than bass, guitar and drums–and bands with women who rock them. Maddie was up there shredding on the guitar and Amber on the electric violin is all I really need to say to get anyone to check out this band.

Emmure held their own next on the stage. I’ve seen these guys play years ago but it was a pleasure to see them again. They are a staple in anyone’s metalcore playlist. They put out their last album “Hindsight” in 2020 but be sure to check out their latest single “FALSE BOY.”

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS! I had the opportunity to photograph these guys last summer on their ’20 Years of Tears’ tour with Thursday, Anberlin and Cartel. Getting to hear “Ohio is for Lovers” twice in less than a year actually blew my mind. Hawthorne Heights are another staple in millennial emo band lovers’ playlists. Check out their latest EP “Sandpaper and Silk” that includes seven of their tracks reimagined.

CHIODOS! This is one of my top three most played bands that I used to listen to on repeat in high school. I was devastated when the band called it quits years ago but when they announced the revival with Craig Owens I freaked out.“Bone Palace Ballet: Grand Coda” and “All’s Well That Ends Well” went triple platinum (at least) in my household–much to the dismay of my boring parents who said “it’s just a phase.” Well, look who’s laughing now mom and dad! Seven studio albums and a 2023 single later and I am still stanning my favorite post-hardcore emo band. Go listen to “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute On The Creek” right now–I mean it!

Music aside, my favorite moment of the night was a small boy in the crowd gaining a core memory. As I was getting set for Hawthorne Heights in the photo pit, I heard the crowd erupt in cheers, stop, then cheer again. All of us photographers were confused as nobody except the sound crew were on stage. I turned around to see a man holding up his son who was wearing a Chiodos shirt (the back said This Is My First Concert) and then bring him down then lift him back up again. That kid will remember this show for his whole life.
