En Vogue, TLC, and Salt n Pepa- ITS ICONIC TOUR // Dallas, TX

October 5th was nothing short of iconic. Three acts, seven divas, one stage, and a packed Toyota Music Factory made this the event of the year here in Dallas. Multiple generations of folks, many of whom dressed to impress, came to celebrate the best in R&B and Hip Hop music.

DJ Dubz pumped up the crowd for an hour, mixing back-to-back nostalgia bangers. The whole crowd was on their feet dancing and having the best time of their lives. Instead of your typical concert where each act plays their full set and is done, this group did something different. Each act rotated in through the evening playing a few songs before the next took the stage. It was very interesting, but the flow worked out spectacularly.

The lights went down and a spotlight hit the stage for En Vogue to make their entrance and boy, was it as epic as one would imagine. Opening their first set with that *iconic* intro “never gonna get it never gonna get it” sent the audience roaring with cheer! The fabulous women sang “My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)” and “Free Your Mind” for their first set and good lord they still got it! They look good, they sound good and their energy on stage is an entire vibe. Their second set was just as lively with three tunes that had everyone groovin’.

Holding things down for TLC was the infamous Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas. The group lost Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes to a tragic accident in 2002. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins started the tour with Chilli before suffering a sickle cell crisis resulting in hospitalization. Chilli, joined on stage by her incredible dancers, put on the greatest show, despite all obstacles. Keeping things going, they started with medleys from TLC’s hits including “Ain’t Too Proud” and “What About Your Friends,” then ending set one on “Diggin.”

TLC set two was when the real magic happened. “Creep,” “Red Light Special,” “Unpretty,” “No Scrubs,” and “Waterfalls.” I mean, name a better five-song set than that! Many millennials and gen x ladies were getting their life for that. Before “No Scrubs,” Chilli searched the audience asking who in the crowd was not old enough to drive and asking their ages. There were several fourteen-year-olds but she landed on a cutie pie eight-year-old girl that she invited to come onto the stage with her. She told the girl that when she learns to drive, she better never pay any mind to a man that pulls up next to her in the “passenger side of his best friend’s ride.”

First Ladies of Hip-Hop, Salt-N-Pepa. Their stage name speaks for itself and so do their performances in complete honesty. The legendary duo, joined on stage by DJ Spinderella, played a spectacular seven songs in their first set. Their energy? Infectious. Their moves? Hot. The Queens from Queens (New York) pumped up the mf jams. En Vogue joined them on stage for “Whatta Man” which was arguably the best moment of the night.

Set two for S-N-P gave the fans mega hits “Ain’t Nuthin But A She Thang,” “Lets talk About Sex,” “Shoop” and “Push It!” The word “icon” gets tossed around a bit too much these days but this set? Purely iconic.
