A long line of fans waited to enter Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas for Dinosaur Jr. on October 9. Inside, the room was comfortably full, with a mix of ages that was one of the evening’s pleasant surprises. Younger fans, including a few kids near the front, joined an older crowd for a night of alternative rock.
Stef Chura opened with her band, bringing a combination of dreamy vocals and a heavier rock sound. At times, her voice brought Victoria Legrand of Beach House to mind, though her delivery became more intense as the music picked up. Backed by guitars, bass, and drums, she kept the set focused on the songs, with little conversation between them. The audience listened quietly, with a few heads moving along to the music.
When Dinosaur Jr. appeared, fans greeted them with smiles and phones raised to capture the moment. The crowd remained relaxed throughout the performance. There wasn’t much dancing or jumping around, but people seemed absorbed in what was happening onstage.
J Mascis stayed mostly in place at the microphone, focused on singing and playing guitar. His voice sounded great live, and his reserved stage presence gave the audience space to concentrate on the music. There was little conversation between songs, keeping the attention on the performance itself.
Lou Barlow brought a very different energy beside him. Jumping and moving with his bass, he was easily one of the most captivating parts of the night. The intensity of his playing, movement, and vocal contributions made him especially exciting to watch and photograph. From the pit, it was hard not to keep turning the camera toward him.
Blue, red, and orange lights moved across the stage, while the view from upstairs offered a chance to take in the whole room. Being in the photo pit felt much more intimate, making the contrast between Mascis’s stillness and Barlow’s movement even more noticeable.
The sound was strong, and the music had a hypnotic quality that made it easy to settle into the performance. Even for a first-time attendee who knew only a handful of songs, there was plenty to enjoy. Barlow’s energy was a personal highlight, and Dinosaur Jr. delivered a show that rewarded simply standing, listening, and taking it all in.
