May 18, 2025 – I’ve been living in the U.S. for over a decade—an immigrant chasing a dream, building a life, and trying to hold onto pieces of who I was while growing into who I’m becoming. And as an Asian-American music photographer and lifelong fan of ONE OK ROCK, covering this band hits different. It’s not just about the music—it’s about representation, healing, and home.
Covering ONE OK ROCK is always more than just work for me. When I shot their Premonition World Tour last October at the Kia Forum for ZrockR Magazine, I was shaking in the photo pit—part excitement, part nerves, part just being overwhelmed. I still remember gripping my camera tight, trying to steady myself while witnessing a band that’s been such a huge part of my life.
Fast forward to May 18, at the Greek Theatre, for Night 1 of their sold-out Detox Tour run—and it felt different. Somehow more intimate, even with thousands of people there. The outdoor setting, the night sky—it all made the music hit even deeper.
The band opened strong with “Puppets Can’t Control You,” setting the tone for a night filled with energy and emotion. The flow of songs like “The Beginning,” “Save Yourself,” and “Let Me Let You Go” pulled everyone in deeper, while “NASTY” and “Renegades” had the crowd roaring with intensity.
The set continued with “Tropical Therapy” and “Tiny Pieces,” giving moments of reflection before an instrumental break led into “C.U.R.I.O.S.I.T.Y.” The vibe shifted again with “Dystopia,” “Make It Out Alive,” and “Delusion: All,” each song packed with the band’s signature passion.
They didn’t slow down—“Stand Out Fit In” and “The Pilot </3” brought heartfelt messages that clearly resonated with the crowd.
The encore was unforgettable. Opening with “+Matter,” followed by “Decision” featuring Tyler Carter, the energy soared higher than ever. The night closed with the anthem “We Are,” a perfect send-off that left everyone feeling connected and empowered.
And the crowd? It was full of people like me. Fellow Asians, fans from all over, people who had waited years for this. I made eye contact with others who were just as emotional, just as in it. This wasn’t just a concert. It was a space where we were allowed to feel—and where we felt seen.
Watching Taka, Toru, Ryota, and Tomoya on stage, so tight and full of energy, made it clear how much this band has grown, yet stayed true to who they are. And the crowd? Every single person was right there with them—singing, feeling, healing.
I’m so thankful to have the chance again to watch them live and cover the show—and a huge shoutout to my boss at my day job for supporting me and letting me take the time off to do this.
Covering ONE OK ROCK again, after last year, reminded me why I keep doing this. Their music helped me find my voice when I first came here. Now, it reminds me of the power of showing up—no matter where you come from or what you carry with you.
This wasn’t just a concert. It was a reminder that we’re all in this together!
