UB40 Saturday, July 28th Brooklyn Bowl:
I must say that when Angel and I walked into the venue and I saw that beautiful huge backdrop saying UB40 on it I suddenly felt this big rush of happiness fill my whole body. I had not seen UB40 since they first came to the U.S.A. let’s just say some years ago. It was Angel’s first time and she had been wanting to see them for years.
Now, our time had come. After about only a 10 minute wait the lights went down and out comes the band, minus Ali Campbell and Astro, opening with “Flying High”, but then suddenly out came Astro and Ali to a very loud, happy and dancing crowd and directly into “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)”.
Playing other greats such as “Version Girl”, Kingston Town”, “Rat In The Kitchen”, and my favorite “Cherry Oh Baby”, the band was tight and all vocals were spot on. Audience participation never wandered from old to newer songs. “Many Rivers To Cross” always gets my heart. Angel was so busy dancing and could not get enough of the UB40 sound. When we were treated to an about 8 minute version of “Red Red Wine”, who could complain?
Everybody sang, danced, and we did see a lot of red wine by the end of the set. It’s a tradition what can I say. We so do regret the many times we let them pass by and did not go to their shows but that won’t happen again. UB40 are legendary not to be missed.
