August 15, 2026 – If there is one band that can unite boomers with GenX with millennials, it’s Train. These guys have a hit from virtually every era of their nearly three-decade-long career from “Meet Virginia,” to “Drops Of Jupiter,” to “Hey Soul Sister,” to “Marry Me.” This is one of those bands that makes one go “wow, yeah they kind of raised me!” This is also one of those bands that need to be experienced in a live setting at least once in life – heavy on “at least.”
In Dallas, we had a bit of an early start with the first opener, Matt Nathanson. This brilliant singer-songwriter kicked the night off with an incredible eleven-song set. Nathanson played three covers including Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” as well as a handful of his own tunes. At one point he even made his way through the crowd, up into the lawn area before ending his set with his hit “Come On Get Higher” that morphed into “Defying Gravity”!
With the crowd thoroughly amped, Barenaked Ladies took to the stage for what felt like their own headlining show. These guys really know how to party and have a good time. Weaving through their greatest hits we heard songs like “Pinch Me” “One Week” and Lovin’ Life,” but, some of the crowd favorite moments were when they played the “Big Bang Theory Theme” song and, towards the end of their set, an insane (I mean truly, insane in the best way) mashup of “Pink Pony Club/Texas Hold ‘Em/The Gambler/HOT TO GO!/ Sometimes When We Touch/So Long, Farwell.” Big round of applause for the musical director, my goodness.
Saturday evening in Dallas, TX was hot but not as hot as Train. The band came out and stayed on fire. Kicking the set off with dance bangers including “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” got everyone happy on their feet. During “If It’s Love” all the people in the front row lined up at the barricade to toss their phones up on the stage for lead singer, Pat Monahan, to take selfies.
About a third of the way through their time on stage, Train brought out Matt Nathanson to sing John Mellencamp’s “Jack & Diane” with them, and it was just stunning. “Meet Virginia” turned into a mashup with John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” while Monahan tossed shirts out into the crowd before having the whole band sign the shirt he was wearing, taking that off and tossing it to a lucky fan. Pat’s son, Rock, joined the band on stage for two covers and he was a natural! Talent did not skip a generation.
Train gave their audience over an hour of straight up nostalgia with all their mega hits in between their latest tunes. They gave it their all on that stage before ending on everyone’s favorite 2001 banger “Drops of Jupiter.” This tour is one for the books and should be a priority, must-see for every music lover.
